Poetry is the art of hearing ourselves say things we did not know we knew.
In this little piece from my 2014 poetry collection, I poke fun at our cultural obsession with self-improvement. Who is this “self” that can improve the “self” that needs improving?
Perhaps it is better to simply discover and own our unique gifts. And then commit to using those gifts to create a new alternative future. A future defined by possibility rather than problems. A future we want to live into and inhabit.
And on that journey, no matter how difficult and confusing, we may find we actually improve our selves just a little, and who knows, maybe the world as well…
